Daniel Rodriguez - O Holy Night - Season of Rejoice

“O Holy Night” Welcomes Season of Rejoice at Shepherd’s Grove

Daniel Rodriguez - O Holy Night - Season of RejoiceBeautiful music filled the sanctuary this past Saturday, November 21, as nearly 800 people across two performances celebrated the birth of Jesus and welcomed the Christmas season at Shepherd’s Grove during the second bi-annual “O Holy Night.” The evening featured 16 songs performed by a stunning orchestra, the angelic Hour of Power Choir and spectacular soloists Daniel Rodriguez, Marla Kavanaugh, Mandie Pinto, Dorothy Benham, Diane Freeman-Reynolds, Logan Watts, Casey Zemen, Frank Snip, Michael Skidgel and Karina Nuvo.

The night also featured Scripture readings from the Christmas story by Pastors Bobby Schuller, Chad Blake, Russ Jacobson and Glenn DeMaster. A glorious narration of Jesus’ powerful life, followed by a choral rendition of “Joy to the World” brought the evening to a glorious conclusion.

“O Holy Night” also served as the launch of Season of Rejoice, a six-week-long annual holiday event that features entertainment for the whole family, as well as traditional and contemporary Advent services featuring inspirational messages from Bobby Schuller.

An Update on Work Around the Sanctuary

Shepherd's Grove Sanctuary

Shepherd’s Grove Sanctuary

At our congregational meeting in July we brought to your attention that we were in process of redesigning the stage backdrop and working on a lighting project to enhance the control and use of light in the Sanctuary. At that time we had hoped to accomplish this work during the non-taping break for Hour of Power during August. We’ve been working diligently with multiple vendors on various different aspects of the project but we’re still in process of ironing out the final details.

We’ve decided that rather than meet our deadline with a product that wasn’t 100% we’re continuing to work on this project with our team, the consistory, and our outside vendors until we feel it’s captured what we’re going after.

The project is still very much underway and in the works. We hope to have something installed at some point this fall. The install will take between 7-10 days. We’ve made the decision that when the time comes we will schedule an additional taping break to allow us to complete the project.

We’re excited for what’s in the works and are looking forward to it’s completion!

These pastors were also installed into the following positions within the ministry: Bobby as Lead Pastor, Chad as the Executive Pastor of Shepherd’s Grove Church and Russ as the Executive Pastor of The Hour of Power & Chief Operating Officer of the ministry.

Bobby, Chad and Russ – we are blessed by your leadership and delighted to make this journey with you. Let us all continue to press on for the glory of God, and the advancement of his kingdom.

Memorial Day Service with Christ Cathedral and Shepherd's Grove

Second Annual Joint Memorial Day Prayer Service

by Chad Blake

Memorial Day Service with Christ Cathedral and Shepherd's GroveMemorial Day, celebrated this year on May 25th, is a national holiday in which we pause and remember all of those who gave their lives while serving in the armed forces. It dates back to the years after the Civil War and has long-standing traditions found within our culture. Many visit cemeteries and memorials to pay honor to those who died in military service while others attend one of the thousands of parades held throughout our country honoring those who gave their lives.

This year marks our Second Annual Joint Memorial Day Prayer Service between Shepherd’s Grove and Christ Cathedral. We invite you to join us for a special Prayer Service in honor of our nation’s fallen heroes at the Christ Cathedral Arboretum at 11am. Afterward there will be an observance within the Cathedral Memorial Gardens Cemetery starting at noon.

This year’s prayer service will be co-led by Pastor Bobby Schuller and Father Christopher Smith. Shepherds Grove will also be represented by several of our other pastors.

Would you join me in praying for our nation’s heroes, the high cost that they paid, and for their families who still suffer the loss of their absence.

In Christian theology, all believers are called to be leaders and disciples. We all possess gifts, graces and talents that we have been blessed with to build God’s kingdom. Even so, certain individuals are called to be set apart as leaders of a congregation as ordained ministers. In the Reformed tradition, we refer to this office as Minister of Word and Sacrament. Those who are ordained to this office are called to a tremendous responsibility as leaders and shepherds. It is both a privilege and commitment, not to be entered into lightly.

Our church has always valued education, training and ordination for its pastors. I am pleased to report that this tradition remains alive and well. Our church has been blessed with three individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to this local church and the body of Christ: Bobby Schuller, Chad Blake and Russ Jacobson. They have now completed the requirements for ordination in the Reformed Church in America (RCA). All are graduates of Fuller Theological Seminary and the RCA’s Ministerial Formation program. All three have successfully completed their classes, papers, and presentations. They also passed their oral exams with the Classis of California and are approved to move forward with ordination. They even completed a summer program in Holland, Michigan at Western Theological Seminary. This is not a process for the faint of heart!

On Sunday, June 28, 2015 at 3:00 pm, this season of preparation will culminate in a service of Ordination and Installation as follows: Bobby as the Lead Pastor, Chad as the Executive Pastor a Shepherd’s Grove and Russ as the Executive Pastor — Hour of Power. Dr. Chuck Van Engen, a professor at Fuller Seminary, will be giving the message. Please mark your calendars for this historic event in the Shepherd’s Grove sanctuary. You will not want to miss this opportunity to celebrate the culmination of a very important and lengthy process.

I have made serving this church the last chapter of my life’s work. I want you to know that I am personally excited about the future and direction of Shepherd’s Grove and The Hour of Power. I am grateful for these three young men, very capable and highly trained, who are being called to be our next generation of leaders. In addition they are friends, colleagues and brothers in Christ. Please join me in congratulating them and wishing them (and us) the Very best.
