Lasting Legacy: A Tribute to Don Neuen

Whenever folks talk about the Hour of Power with Bobby Schuller and Shepherd’s Grove Church, one of the first things that comes to mind is our amazing music, and our sensational choir. It’s no secret that we are blessed to have the “best choir in the world,” as Bobby says so often from the pulpit.

At the center of that excellence is conductor extraordinaire Don Neuen, who has been faithfully serving our congregation with his immense talent and knowledge for several decades.

Don is known worldwide as one of the best performance leaders in the world, and one of the foremost scholars and experts on the works of Handel. His textbooks and scholarly work is widely used, and have been translated and shared around the world.

He is also the recipient of numerous accolades, including the highest honor given to citizens from his home state of Indiana.

Recently, Bobby Schuller joined Don in the choir loft to announce his upcoming retirement, which can be watched here:

We are thrilled for Don to begin his next chapter, and are overjoyed to send him with best wishes as we celebrate his work and time with us.

On April 20, 2017 at 5:30pm we will be hosting our special event, “Lasting Legacy: A Tribute to Don Neuen,” to be held in the Arboretum at Christ Cathedral. This occasion will include dinner with Don and friends, shared reflections and memories from his time with us, and sensational performances from longtime favorites like Tom Tipton, Dorothy Benham, and Daniel Rodriguez. Of course, Don’s beloved choir will be there as well, showcasing the love and skill he has added over the years.

Tickets are available for purchase starting Sunday, March 12, in the plaza at Shepherd’s Grove, or by calling us at 714-971-4000. Cost will be $25, with a limited number of VIP tickets available for $100. This is an exclusive event, and tickets WILL sell out!

We wish nothing but the best to Don and his wife in their newest adventure, and invite you to join us in showing our love and admiration.

God loves you, Don, and so do we!

Tickets can be purchased here:

Don will be leading the Hour of Power Choir for a special performance of Handel’s Messiah at Shepherd’s Grove on Friday, April 14 at 7:30 pm. This free event is open to all! learn more here.

Handel’s Messiah coming to Shepherd’s Grove

This upcoming Friday, April 14, all are invited to attend a wonderful evening of music and celebration, as the Hour of Power Choir and Orchestra performs the latter movements of Handel’s Messiah, led by world-renowned Handel scholar, conductor Don Neuen.

Considered by many to be one of the preeminent scholars on the works of Handel, Neuen’s directorship in this performance will be a celebration of decades leading the Hour of Power’s choral excellence. His well-deserved retirement following this concert means that this will be an exceptional and uncommon opportunity to see and hear Handel in the hands of an expert.

Messiah features many wonderful solos, and the wide talent of our celebrated choir will be on full display. Rarer still, to have such skill freely available to enjoy is worth bringing your friends and family!

The concert will begin at 7:30 pm in the sanctuary, with doors opening shortly before. This concert is non-ticketed and will be open to everyone (attendees will be given the opportunity to make a love offering if they so wish). We are expecting a very full house, and seating will be first come, first serve. Please call 714-971-4000 with any questions you may have.

Voices of Hope Children’s Choir to Share their Christmas Spirit

On December 18, 2016, the Voices of Hope Children’s Choir will be “taking over” the sanctuary for an evening of music, Christmas spirit, and fun… All led by the kids themselves!

The children, rehearsing choreography

Starting at 6 pm, our wonderful young ones will be leading all those attending in a time of high holiday spirits as they share their musical gifts, led by director Sarah Grandpre. Hear the Christmas story as told by the children, sharing the story of our Savior’s birth. Expect a few fun musical surprises as well!

Following the service, sweet refreshments will be served. Come and support the hard work our children have put in to performing, and experience the holiday spirit as only they can share.

Do you have a child in 1st-10th grade looking to gain valuable vocal experience singing with our choir? Information, and an opportunity to sign up will be made available following the event. Rehearsals are Thursday evenings from 4-7, and our director requests unchanged voices only.

“O Holy Night” a Great Success!

On the evening of Saturday, Dec. 3, we were honored to host the annual “O Holy Night” Concert. Talented artists from stage and screen joined our phenomenal choir and orchestra for a night of stirring Christmas music. We had a full house, as our local community gathered to celebrate the season!

While there were far too many wonderful moments to list here, these are a few highlights from the show:

The Schuller family welcomes the crowd to our celebration of Christmas.

It takes a lot of courage to sing in front of so many people, but Noelle Lidyoff performed “Sing We Now of Christmas” wonderfully!

Caity Peters shared deeper meaning of the season with her rendition of “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day”

Todd Strange jumped back and forth from the choir loft to center stage, using his gifts as an operatic tenor on songs like “Where Else Would a Lamb Be Born?”

Dorothy Benham is always a Shepherd’s Grove favorite, singing the titular song of the night.

Our own Voices of Hope children’s choir, led by Sarah Grandpre, performed “All is Well”, with a surprise joining of the Hour of Power choir to back them up!

Kevin Rose’s smooth voice fit perfectly with songs like “Believe”

Maiya Sykes had everyone on their feet following songs like “Jesus, O What a Wonderful Child”!

This was truly an amazing night of Christmas fun for everyone, right down to the magic of snowfall in Southern California! If you missed the concert and would still like to see it, or just want to watch it again (and again and again!), DVD’s of the program will soon be made available for purchase.

We would like to thank Dr. Marc Riley and the Hour of Power Orchestra, Don Neuen and the Hour of Power Choir, our amazing soloists and everyone that helped to make this evening a success. It is a joy to be able to share such great shows in our community. Merry Christmas, everyone!

5 Reasons You Should Go to “O Holy Night”

Shepherd’s Grove is preparing for the Christmas season!

Christmas is just about to get in to full-swing, and we here at Shepherd’s Grove want to help you get the season going with a truly dazzling show! On December 3, our sanctuary will be filled with the sounds of Christmas as we present our “O Holy Night” Concert. This is shaping up to be a wonderfully special evening, and we want you to be a part of it. Here’s 5 quick reasons you won’t want to miss this show.

1. Amazing artists

We are overjoyed to have some exceptionally gifted artists performing on our stage, from powerhouse performers well-known to “The Voice” fans, to skilled entertainers of operatic and theatrical renown.

2. Watch it before the rest of the world

It’s no secret that the Hour of Power with Bobby Schuller has a global reach, and this concert will be no exception. A recording of this performance will be shared with our friends around the world, in places like the Netherlands, Hong Kong and Germany to name a few. Come take in the joy of the season, and know the performances you’re watching live will soon be enjoyed by people all around the globe!

3. Take a moment to breathe

Let’s face it; this time of year can get a bit hectic. By attending our performance, you are setting aside time to simply take in the wonder and enchantment around this time of year. As Bobby often says, even Jesus set aside time to rest, and so should you.

4. A white Christmas… in SoCal?!

Most of us here in Southern California enjoy the warm weather year-round, and are more than happy to avoid the harshness other areas of the world face in the winter months. Still, there’s something magical about a light snowfall that can warm you in ways a California climate cannot. We want to make sure you get to experience such an iconic Christmas moment, so make sure you’re prepared for a flurry or two while attending!

5. The gift of an experience

The truth is, you’re going to be putting your money towards many physical things this December, which are sure to bring joy, but nothing can beat a shared experience among friends and family. Those memories will last much longer, and are far more priceless.

Moreover, by attending our concert, you will be supporting a community ministry with a global reach, sharing the message of Love and Dignity year-round.

We truly hope to have you with us on December 3, but know that seating is limited. If you would like to attend, you can purchase your tickets HERE, or by calling 866-GET-HOPE(438-4673).

Achieving the Impossible Dream: A Musical Tribute to Robert Schuller

Achieving the Impossible Dream: A Musical Tribute to Robert Schuller

Achieving the Impossible Dream: A Musical Tribute to Robert Schuller

Blog by Pastor Russ Jacobson

Welcome to the ministry’s very first blog post!  We have been looking forward to this day for a very long time.  We have been searching for just the right method to keep you – our parishioners, viewers, supporters and friends updated with accurate, official content straight from the ministry.  It has taken longer than we anticipated, but we wanted to make sure we did it right.  We have now settled on the best approach and communication channel.  As a result, you can expect to see fresh content here every week as we strive to keep our friends around the world informed about what is new with Shepherd’s Grove and The Hour of Power.

As our very first blog post, it is my pleasure to announce that the ministry will be planning and hosting a gala event to honor our founder:  Rev. Dr. Robert H. Schuller.  The event is entitled “Achieving the Impossible Dream:  A Musical Tribute to Robert Schuller.”  This is not a memorial service, but rather a concert dedicated to a man of God who treasured music as a direct pathway to the human heart.   Please mark your calendars for 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 21, 2015 at Shepherd’s Grove.

You may already recognize the date – it is Father’s Day, and we selected that day on purpose.  Dr. Schuller was an earthly father to Robert A. and his sisters.  He was also a beloved grandfather to Bobby and his cousins.  To the rest of us, Dr. Schuller was akin to a spiritual father – an affirming, positive presence in our lives who exhorted us to overcome any obstacle and make every day a great day.  I never had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Schuller in person, but his teaching brought me to faith in Jesus Christ and transformed my life in extraordinary ways.  I can truly proclaim that my wife, children and I are Christians because of Dr. Schuller.

The details are still coming together, but we can already confirm that the world renowned Hour of Power choir and orchestra will both be present in full force under the direction of Don Neuen and Marc Riley respectively.  We will also be blessed with stirring performances by Dorothy Benham, Ken Medema, Daniel Rodriguez, Tom Tipton, and other special guests.  We also expect to have remembrances and anecdotes from personal friends of Dr. Schuller.   You will not want to miss this opportunity to honor Dr. Schuller through music and the spoken word!  The event will be taped for those who are unable to attend in person.  Please stay tuned for details.

Thank you for taking the time to read this inaugural blog post.  Please remember to connect with us on Facebook, YouTube and Twitter.  Remember, God loves you and so do we!
